Maryo Gaiden sequel

Postby Robwood » 16 Feb 2010 23:24

Hi guys! Still trying to work on this damn thing but it's been so long that I decided to give you this little sample. I don't know when I'll be able to work on it again, but rest assured I haven't given up or forgotten. I'm not really one for proffering a level before it's completed since that means people will be downloading the same files in the future, but you guys deserve this little treat of mine.

Give it a play and let me know what you think of it so far--this story is so huge that I've actually had to create an overworld for it! Also, this story is heavy on text in the beginning, but I did what I could to interrupt it with gameplay. Let me know if you like it or if you think it needs more gameplay to break up all those words. Thanks!

And one last thing: In the final area of the castle is a series of doors. You will be presented with three areas like this, where you're given an option to go in doors 1-4. The third one is the last part. This takes you to a room with six doors and choosing the correct door would allow you to re-enter the body of the castle again but I haven't gotten around to it, so when you choose the correct door here, it'll take you back to the overworld.

Great levels! Only problem is the fact that the overworld only has 4 of the levels, the other 2 levels on the overworld just send you to level 1. :?

All of that is because it's still a work in progress. As mentioned earlier, there will be more to the castle; I just haven't gotten to it, yet. The last level in the overworld takes you to level 1 because I haven't made a new level beyond the castle yet. My main concern is the gameplay. Does the text run too long? Do I need to break it up with more gameplay? How should I treat dying in the castle? For those who make substantial progress only to die, they have to start from the very beginning of the castle level all over again.

If people save a lot like me, then having to restart is not a problem.

Yea there is a lot of text, but I don't find that as much of a problem (but I read lots of books so I'm used to lots of reading).

One other question: When you guys played it through the first time, did you ever go back to talk to the citizen of the castle? Or did you just stumble upon where to go?

Well the first time I went to jump somewhere but fell off the top, but when I landed I didn't know where to go, so I just cheated my way back up and continued, then I found the civilian again and found where to go.

Well skulking is a word, and it's definition works well with what is going on. :star:

There is no level two. Could you give me the specific level name? I can't find the word anywhere.

OK, I've reviewed it and took the liberty of looking up skulking to see if any of its definitions fit within the context of the story. The closest ones I can find are "To lie in hiding, as out of cowardice or bad conscience; lurk" and " To evade work or obligation; shirk." Neither of those really fit as Maryo came out of hiding to see his grandfather and he's obviously not shirking anything as he went to his grandfather's house. I agree with Luiji and have already made the change in the level on my computer. Thanks!

By the way, have you guys figured out all the riddles I left in these levels or have you just cheated your way through? Just curious.

I'm not to far through the game, as I have a lot of other stuff on my to-do list, but so far the riddles have been pretty good. It took me awhile to figure out which items was the pogo-stick, though. You may want to consider making a graphics request.

Well I did find things along the lines of "cow says milk does a body good" or whatever.

And I found the thing that tells you what order rooms you go in the castle. :star:

Did you find the things that tell you which door to go through in the final 1-6 section?

Also, some things to take notice of:

1. When Maryo leaves his house, if you jump on the outhouse and onto the roof of the castle, you'll see that the flag is at half staff. Gee, I wonder who that could be for?
2. You can die in the grandfather section. When outside the grandfather's house, you can jump onto the outhouse and onto the roof and go down the chimney. Doing so will place you right in the fireplace. I did it just to be cruel  --just in case somebody got the bright idea to try this method to get power ups they wouldn't have otherwise gotten.
