Skyland

Postby Luiji » 01 Mar 2010 01:44

In a Feature Request I requested having some pre-defined lands other then the four farmlands. One of them was Skyland. I decided to design some of Skyland as proof-of-concept.

It is really early in development, but I just wanted to make some requests for anybody that wants to help me.

Requests:
  • New Music: A combination between land_4.ogg and waterway_1.ogg, with a little more of a flute sound to it.
  • New Graphics:
    • Small Rocket Ship Pointing Up (a little more then maryo's width but four times his height)
    • Male character that looks mean. Name: John O'Reilly
    • Male character that looks falsely happy. Name: Guy McKeen
  • Beta Testers (later on)

If you're making levels for overworlds, characters and side stories should not be used.

mmm we may also need some sort of "sky ground" I know we have cloud blocks but i think it best to have a standard ground type for these levels for a uniform look. I will put this on my to do list but i do want to coment that it is still open to others should I not get to it first.

I also wanted to add that BowserJr is right that NPC's and side stories should be avoided if it is to go upstream mainly because we have not settled on a solid back story for maryo.

Originally these guys were going to be story characters, yes, but then I realized that BowserJr was right.

Cloud flooring would be nice, as currently I'm just using big clouds and clouds blocks.

The characters I am now going to have in side of "Best Eastern Hotels" to provide mushrooms. Just Guy then, please.

It would be nice if after I made a level or two for style concept, that better level developers (levelengine, Crabmaster, and Robwood, for example) would develop some levels, too. That person who made "Maryonaise.smclvl" is a good level developer too.

How many levels should there be in a world? I was thinking 20.

A to-do list in your signature might be pretty big. Maybe you should do what I did and link to your wiki User: namespace.

I may make some levels, but I have to many level projects already so I may not. (I am doing SuperEpic, making a new overworld design for the game to make it easier to add more overworlds and a story, my own worlds, random levels I started some time ago, three final levels for the game that I'm going to try to get in-game, maybe a story somewhere in here, and a forest overworld.)

Yea I know right, I think I like making levels to much. :P

Also id I didn't already say it, I think 10 levels should be enough, 20 seems to much, also in the overworld setup I'm doing I think I may make your sky world world 4.

For anybody interested in developing some Skyland levels, here's an example of layout. It's an incomplete level mostly created for the purpose of showing how the design should be.

I was initially creating a level, then I had Crabmaster redo it based on the terrible level that I designed. So the following level is his.

Just to make this clear I was testing out how moving platforms could work in this.

I had an idea with what types of levels could be goo for this.
Levels with lots of moving platforms needed to get around.
Levels with mushrooms everywhere in the sky.
Levels with lots of clouds as the platforms.
Levels with high mountains peeks popping out from the bottom of the level.

I'm currently working on 2 main levels

a jungle in the sky style (kinda like DK junglebeat style but not the same)

and an ice level that is icy platforms up in the sky

(im a big sky person if you cant tell)
Please note I am a very busy person and may disappear for months at times....
If I vanished and you want something I was working on completed..... just PM me
PM reaches my email and that will shove SMC up in my priority.
